About Uinta Mountains
The Uinta Mountains are a unique east-west trending mountain range located in northeastern Utah. This remote and rugged range is the highest in the state, featuring dozens of peaks over 13,000 feet. The Uintas are characterized by broad, rounded summits, deep glacial valleys, and numerous alpine lakes. The western Uintas are more heavily forested, while the eastern sections have a more barren, tundra-like environment. Wildlife is abundant, including herds of Rocky Mountain elk, bighorn sheep, and the elusive Uinta ground squirrel.
